Know Your Zone
Look up your zone, see who leaves first, and plan your route out.
- Look up your address on the zone map on Brevard Emergency Management's Have a Plan page1, or on the state's Know Your Zone map6.
- Zone A goes first. The county calls a mandatory evacuation for Zone A, which includes the barrier islands, Merritt Island and some low-lying mainland areas. People in mobile or manufactured homes, or in low-lying or flood-prone areas, should also leave, on the mainland or the islands1.
- Why the islands empty out: the county includes all parts of the barrier islands in an evacuation because of storm surge1.
- Not every zone is ordered out every time. Zone A is the most likely to evacuate first. If no evacuation order is issued for your area, the state says you may consider sheltering in place, as long as you know your home can stand up to strong winds and heavy rain6.
If you have to leave
- Evacuate early1
- Travel tens of miles, not hundreds, and shelter locally1
- Pick a sturdy home or hotel outside the evacuation zone, or a public shelter1
- Know a primary and an alternate route, with destinations in different directions1
- Make a household plan: how you'll get alerts, where you'll meet and how you'll reach each other if phones are down1
