Hurricane Shelters

Primary, special needs and pet-friendly shelters, free rides and what to bring.

3 shelter types Β· From our Hurricane Prep guide Β· Reviewed October 25, 2026

Which shelters open depends on the storm. Never go to a shelter until officials announce it is open. Openings are announced on local TV and radio, social media and the county Emergency Management website, and 2-1-1 has open shelter locations1. Live status is on the county's Storm Center5.

Primary evacuation shelters

Last resort
  • Meant for residents of the barrier islands (including Merritt Island), low-lying or flood-prone areas and mobile or manufactured homes, or anyone with no other option. Expect noise and crowds.

Special needs shelters

Register ahead
  • For residents with health or medical conditions who need help sheltering. Register with Emergency Management online (Everbridge), by phone at (321) 637-6670, by fax at (321) 633-1738 or by email, and update it every year.
  • Pets are not allowed; Animal Services picks up registered clients' pets and returns them after the storm.

  • Toothbrush, glasses, diapers and other personal items1
  • Three days of food per person if you're on a special diet1
  • Games, books or cards1
