UCF stuns No. 2 BYU 39-31 in double overtime after a wild finish at the Bounce House
A blocked kick, a helmet rule and a goal-line stand: backup QB Keyone Jenkins led the Knights to their first win over an AP top-five team in program history.
UCF knocked off No. 2 BYU 39-31 in double overtime Saturday at the Acrisure Bounce House in Orlando. According to the Associated Press and CBS Sports, it is the Knights' first win over an AP top-five team in program history. WESH 2 reported that BYU was the highest-ranked opponent UCF has ever hosted.
A finish nobody saw coming
With the game tied 24-24 in the final seconds of regulation, BYU appeared to strip-sack UCF quarterback Keyone Jenkins. Replay overturned the fumble and ruled it an incomplete pass, and a personal foul on BYU's Keanu Tanuvasa moved the Knights into range for a 46-yard field goal try, according to KSL.com.
BYU's Faletau Satuala blocked Will Stone's kick with 11 seconds left, USA Today reported. Stone recovered it himself, but his helmet came off on the play. That triggered a mandatory 10-second runoff, and regulation ended there.
In the first overtime, BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier hit Legend Glakser for a touchdown. Jenkins answered on UCF's first snap with a scoring pass to a wide-open Josh Derry.
In the second overtime, UCF made a field goal, but a roughing-the-kicker penalty on BYU's Kendall Wall took the points off the board and gave the Knights a first-and-goal at the 4, according to CBS Sports and KSL.com. Jenkins threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Grayson Brousseau, then found Tyren Hornes on the run for the two-point conversion. BYU drove to the UCF 4-yard line needing a touchdown and a two-point try. Bachmeier's fourth-down pass to Walker Lyons fell incomplete, and fans stormed the field, CBS Sports reported.
The numbers
- Keyone Jenkins, starting in place of injured starter Alonza Burnett III, went 25 of 41 for 293 yards with three touchdown passes. He also ran for a 1-yard score, according to KSL.com.
- Tyren Hornes caught six passes for 137 yards. His 56-yard catch-and-run on a screen set up Jenkins' third-quarter touchdown.
- Bear Bachmeier threw for 257 yards for BYU, and Kyler Kasper had six catches for 129 yards.
BYU came in unbeaten a week after upsetting then-No. 2 Notre Dame. The Cougars fall to 6-1 (3-1 Big 12), and UCF improves to 4-3 (2-2).
