Confirmed by: National Weather Service Melbourne

The National Weather Service in Melbourne issued a Flood Warning on Monday for the St. Johns River near Cocoa, saying the river will rise above flood stage Monday evening and reach moderate flooding later in the week, according to the NWS river Flood Warning. The warning runs until further notice.

The river gauge west of Cocoa read 15.8 feet at 8:15 a.m. Monday, which is bankfull, the weather service said. Flood stage there is 16 feet, and the river is forecast to reach 16.7 feet by Friday morning, with more rises possible after that. At 16.7 feet, the weather service says water covers yards, encroaches on homes and may enter low-lying homes along the river in the Lake Poinsett area.

Unlike the fast-moving street flooding from Monday's downpours, the river is forecast to keep rising for days, through at least Friday morning. The weather service urges drivers not to go around barricades or through flooded areas and asks people to use caution near riverbanks. Its next update on the river is due at 11:45 p.m. Monday.
