Confirmed by: National Weather Service Melbourne

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a High Surf Advisory for coastal Brevard, Volusia and Indian River counties from 5 p.m. Saturday until 7 p.m. Sunday, according to an alert issued at 1:38 a.m. Saturday. Forecasters expect large breaking waves of 5 to 7 feet in the surf zone, along with localized beach erosion.

The high rip current risk for Brevard's beaches has been extended through late Monday night, according to the updated rip current statement. The weather service says rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore, and it describes swimming and surfing conditions as dangerous.

Inland, NWS Melbourne said Saturday morning that isolated to numerous showers are expected, with gusts of 30 to 40 mph, occasional lightning and heavy rain that could cause minor flooding of roads and low-lying areas.

This comes after a week of king tides, coastal flooding and erosion along the county's shoreline. See our earlier coverage of the coastal flood alerts.

Conditions change. Check NWS Melbourne for the latest alerts.
